Dear Mr. President

Dear Mr. President,

I am writing as a citizen of this country. No, you don't know me, Sir, and neither do many of our contrymen recognize me because I'm just this ordinary Filipino citizen who does an ordinary work and lives an ordinary life.

I am writing, even though I didn't vote for you (and I don't deny to anyone that I voted for an unpopular candidate), because the moment you won in the elections and took that mandate of leading this country, you became my president and I became your constituent.

Mr. President, one and a half year has passed since you assumed office. One and a half year has also passed but all I saw in my limited mind was how the government has been turned into a big prosecutor's office whose main priority is to file charges and find fault against our former president. And while there is nothing wrong with running after her misdeeds, it seems that the more pressing issues on poverty and economic development has been grossly neglected.

While some intelectual groups may argue that doing business has become better in the Philippines because corruption has lessen, the ordinary people don't care about it.

The ordinary people's simple concrens are higher salaries and lower costs of living.

Unfortunately, Mr. President, to my humble knowledge, no salary increases has been given since your term. Instead, what we have experienced are the continuous increase in oil prices, toll increase, electricity power rate hike, and a lot more increases in the common tao's daily expenses.

We carry on like this for the rest of your term, and we will see more people migrating and working abroad. We carry on like this and we will see more people getting poorer and hungrier.

But four and a half more years are still ahead. That is, to say, there is still time for change.

Mr. President, your people are waiting.

It is your time. Now is it.

Catch Me If You Can

It's now a year since Noynoy Aquino resumed office as President of the Republic, and so far, the most significant accomplishment he made is to run after the misdeeds of former president Gloria Arroyo and her administration.

This is the same sentiment shared by ex-budget secretary Benjamin Diokno who said that PNOY's “Daang Matuwid” campaign has made him too concerned about cleaning up after the previous administration that he ends up not doing enough to improve the economy.

Though the battlecry of Noy's electoral campaign in 2010 is actually to minimize corruption in the Philippines (kung walang corrupt, walang mahirap), I hope that the President will still heed to the other side of governance, which is to ensure that his constituents will be taken cared of, specifically with their basic needs.

It is really quite appalling to note that within a year of his administration, we have witnessed how the cost of living has significantly increased. What's more, PNOY can only say that he is not in control of the rising prices in basic commodities.

Mr. President, there is really nothing wrong with running after the previous administration. But there should be specific government agencies whom you can direct to run after the misdeeds of the previous organization. You have already impressed among the people of your seriousness in battling graft and corruption.

It is about time that the Filipino people witness a President who shows concern, not only on things of the past, but on things that matter more to the common filipino- jobs, education, health, peace and order.

June 30, 2010: Special Non Working Holiday

Malacañang Palace today confirmed that out-going President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has declared June 30, 2010 as a special non-working holiday on the entire country, for the inauguration of president-elect Benigno Simeon "Noynoy" Aquino III as the 15th President of the Philippine Republic.

The Inauguration will be conducted at the Quirino Grandstand in Rizal Park (Luneta).

Why Villar Would Win in 2010

Let us admit the fact that as of the moment, we technically have only two proponents in the Presidential Race on May 2010. It's got to be a head on fight between Liberal Party's Noynoy Aquino and Nacionalista Party's Manny Villar. The latest SWS survey revealed that Villar has narrowed the gap between him and Aquino by just 7 statistical points. Conducted on January 21 to 25 with 2,100 respondents, the survey shows that Aquino is ahead with 42%, against Villar with 35%.

But though Aquino still leads in the surveys (both by SWS and Pulse Asia), I still believe that Manny Villar will finally emerge as the next President of the Philippines. Here are my ten (10) humble reasons:

1. The various presidential forums conducted by media giants ABS-CBN and GMA News, including other forums sponsored by schools and other organizations define who among them know what they're talking about. To my personal assessment, and based on the forums, Villar, Teodoro and Gordon are the most capable for the Presidential job.

2. Villar has the money- that is, of course converted into paid tv advertisements that reach even the remotest village so long as they have their television sets.

3. Speaking of paid tv ads, Villar's get the best attention from viewers. Children love the jingle, and whenever you ask them, they'd say, "I Like Manny Villar". And you just can't easily say no to children!

4. If you look at the trends, Noynoy's surveys ratings continue to drop in the recent months. Erap, Gibo, Gordon's ratings, doesn't move significantly. It is Villar's numbers that creeps up and slowly closes in to Aquino.

5. If Lito Banayo is correct, GMA is actually supporting Villar; not Gibo.

6. Villar has a big mass base- Bongbong Marcos (from the North), Adel Tamano (from the South), including the leftists headed by Ka Satur Ocampo.

7. Dolphy, Joey De Leon, Willie Revillame and Michael V. endorse Villar, and we all just love comedians.

8. Roxas overshadows Aquino when it comes to discussion of various issues. To some, this converts to the thought that Noynoy is not his own man.

9. Noynoy just couldn't stop smoking his cigar.

10. Noynoy is not Ninoy; Noynoy is not Cory.

GMA Files COC for Congresswoman

The speculation that has surfaced since early this year has now been confirmed true: President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is gunning for Congresswoman in her hometown district of Pampanga.

In March 2009, this blog featured that a lot of political analysts seem to think that PGMA is hinting on running as representative of the second district of Pampanga where his son, Mikey, is currently holding the position as congressman. The speculations are due to the fact that they have witnessed PGMA visiting the province more than 50 times this year 2009 alone. If rumors are true, PGMA has been pondering on being Speaker of the House come 2010, which can pave a way for her to become Prime Minister, if and when, a Charter Change on the Form of Government will take place.

This morning, PGMA officially filed her Certificate of Candidacy after a mass organized by her townsmen in Lubao, Pampanga.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines professor Randy David, who previously said that he is up to challenge Arroyo if the latter indeed runs for Congresswoman, has now decided not to file his candidacy.

While this has become a bad news for PGMA's opponents who claim that she is only doing it to stay in power and gain immunity from her graft cases, her filing of candidacy for congresswoman is definitely a good news for her constituents in Pampanga.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo found herself (for the nth time) in the center of controversies after she, together with her official entourage in the US, were featured in the New York Post for having the time of their lives spending close to $20,000 USD at the Le Cirque Restaurant in New York.

The excerpt states:

"The economic downturn hasn’t persuaded everyone to pinch pennies. Philippines President Maria Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was at Le Cirque the other night with a large entourage enjoying the good life, even though the former comptroller of her country’s armed services, Carlos Garcia, was found guilty earlier this year of perjury and two of his sons were arrested in the US on bulk cash-smuggling charges. Macapagal-Arroyo ordered several bottles of very expensive wine, pushing the dinner tab up to $20,000.”

This past week has created much happenings in our country that are worth written in the annals of our Philippine history.

Congressman Bongbong Marcos and former Congresswoman Imee Marcos came to the wake of former President Cory Aquino to pay their last tribute. Now, who wouldn't be touched by that 'historic' moment?

Matapos ang ilang dekada ng Marcos vs Aquino family dahil sa pagkamatay ni Ninoy (na ang itinuturing na utak ay ang pamilya Marcos), nagkaharap din finally ang dalawang pamilya. Both camps couldn't say na meron na silang reconciliation, but I am sure, that moment has created a very big impact on our history.

The Aquino family didn't accept Malacañang's offer for a state funeral entitled to former president Cory. Dahil daw sa kanilang 'moral and political differences'.

However, Cory was given full military honors yesterday. Some would say, ano ang difference ng ginawang parangal kay Cory as against a State Funeral. I heard one radio commentator say yesterday,

"Ang kulang lang actually dito, ay iyong hindi siya ibinurol sa Malacañang. But essentially, almost all the details accorded in a State Funeral are there".

For the history- I have never seen such honor and respect given to any Filipino as such was given to Cory yesterday. The outpouring of people lining up in the streets, just waiting to have a glimpse at the former president's final remains is so memorable.

A lot of people are saying that it was just like in 1983 (when Ninoy was killed) and in 1986 (during the EDSA Revolution).

Add the fact na talagang wala ring tigil ang pagbuhos ng ulan maghapon, but that didn't stop the people from participating in the long procession for Cory's burial.

SONA, Twitter, and Pia's Response

This is an update on my previous post about our lawmakers and politicians using Twitter to update the people yesterday about what is happening inside the Batasang Pambansa whereing President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo is delivering her 9th State of the Nation Address.

One good thing about this twitter is we get to interact with "big" people like them. They let us know their thoughts, and we, also, are given the chance to tell them what we think.

I am not able to watch the whole of the SONA so I just waited for the late night news Saksi to catch a glimpse of the SONA highlights.

One quotable quote from the SONA would be GMA's tirade against Senator and Presidential wannabe Mar Roxas:

"To those who want to be President, this advice: .....don’t say bad words in public"

She was speaking, of course, of the incident in one rally in Ayala, Makati wherein Mar Roxas cursed in front of the many people at the rally. Roxas later received a lot of negative comments about his misbehaving in public.

• Saksi, the late night GMA News program featured our politicians who resorted to using Twitter during the SONA. Pia and Chiz's Twitter accounts, which I followed during the event, were even featured.

• Manny Pacquiao was present during the SONA, and he was also acknowledged by Madam GMA during her speech, I wonder, though if he was able to enjoy the whole of the speech .

• The controversial announcement the people has been waiting for didn't arrive. We didn't hear about PGMA's plans after 2010.

• The militant groups, as expected, staged their own SONA con rally outside the Batasan Complex. They, however, were drenched with the heavy rains yesterday at the area.

Twit Twit Twitter on SONA

I haven't got any access on TV right now, and I'm a little interested on what's happening at the Batasan Complex where President Gloria Arroyo is currently delivering her 8th (and last?) State of the Nation Address (SONA).

The news are a little late on updating the event, so I resorted to checking what our lawmakers are twitting about on Twitter.

I see Senator Chiz Escudero is giving a blow-by-blow account, but I'm not sure if he's there at the Batasan. Anyway, he mentioned that the SONA is about to start at 4pm.

Senator Pia Cayetano's post,however, got my attention.

Battle of the Gods

We are in exciting times, aren't we?

By the looks of it, it seems the gods are taking an active part in the Pinoys' favorite subject, which is, the coming 2010 elections.

For those who have followed the course of nation's history, it is to be noticed that the religious sects have always been taking active participation in the way we choose our leaders, and in the way our leaders govern us. Perhaps it is safe to say that at least, in the Philippines, leaders rise and fall on religion.

It is the voice of Manila Archbishop Jaime Cardinal Sin, heard over the radio, that summoned the countless people to stage the historic EDSA Revolution in 1986.

While the Christian group of Eddie Villanueva endorsed Jose De Venecia's presidential bid in 1998, Joseph Estrada amassed the votes of the Iglesia ni Cristo and the El Shaddai group and made his way to the Palace in one of the biggest vote margin difference in the history of Philippine Presidential elections.

Some years after, however, these same religious groups were calling their members to once again proceed to EDSA and ask Joseph Estrada to step down to power.

As we approach the 2010 elections, the people expect that religion once again will play an important role in the outcome of the voting.

As early as March 2009, Bro. Eddie Villanueva of the Jesus Is Lord Movement who takes pride of his strong 5 million populace, has announced his intention to run again for President (he ran and lost to Gloria Arroyo in 2004). Believing that he has received a clear mandate from God, Bro. Eddie said that he is stepping down from his post as a church pastor in order to fulfill his call to lead our nation. Thus, he claims to have received his blessing from "priestly anointing" to "kingly anointing".

This July, Catholic priest turned Pampanga Governor Ed Panlilio has also announced that he'll be running for President. Panlilio said that after much prayer and discernment, he is sure that 'God called him to run for the presidency'.

Nobody, of course, will ever believe that the influential Muslim group, Iglesia Ni Cristo and El Shaddai will support any among Panlilio and Villanueva. Thus, people expect that they will be supporting the rest of either Mar Roxas, Manny Villar, Noli De Castro, etc.

With four months to go before the filing of the Certificate of Candidacy in November, and with eight months before the May elections next year, the Filipino is once again at the front of choosing his next president. Not withstanding which sect we belong to, let us all pray that the real God will appoint the best and the proper person to become our President.

A Few Good News

How's these for a treat? Here are a few good news for consumers:


Cellphone Loads

Beginning Sunday, July 19, 2009, the shelf life of cellphone load/credits will be increased, according to the National Telecommunications Commission. This resulted from the Senate Inquiry conducted when Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile complained about the "vanishing/missing loads" from cellular phones.

Additionally, beginning July 23, spam or advertisement sms messages sent by the telecommunication companies to their subscribers will be prohibited, unless consumers subscribes first from their promos.

The new shelf life of cellphone loads are as follows:

P10 - 50: 5 to 15 days
P51 - 100: 30 days
P101 - 250: 60 days
P251 - 300: 75 days




Rent Control Act of 2009

Republic Act 9653, or the Rent Control Act of 2009, signed by President Gloria Arroyo on July 14, specifies that there should be no rental increase for one year from the time the law has been signed and approved. Also, it puts a cap of not more than 7% increase of rental fees until 2013.

It also specifies the following conditions:


The law covers all residential units in Metro Manila with a monthly rent of P1 to P10,000 and all units in urban cities with a monthly rent of P1 to P5,000.

Violators face a fine of P25,000 to P50,000, or imprisonment of one month and a day up to six months, or both.

According to the law, when a unit becomes vacant, the owner may set the initial rent for the next renter. In the case of boarding houses, dormitories, rooms, and bed spaces, no increase will be imposed more than once a year.

It also says that rent will be paid in advance within the first five days of every month, or at the beginning of the lease agreement unless the contract of lease provides for a later date of payment.

It forbids the owner from demanding more than one-month advance rent and more than two-months deposit. Any interest in the deposit will be returned to the renter at the end of the lease agreement.

If the renter fails to pay rent or utility bills or destroys house property, the deposit and interest shall be forfeited in favor of the unit owner in the amount that would cover the arrears or damages.

The law prohibits the sub-leasing of the unit without the consent of the unit owner. This, together with the failure to pay rent for three months and the owner’s need to repossess the property or make necessary repairs to make it more safe and habitable, are grounds for judicial ejection.

The renter, however, cannot be ejected on grounds that the unit has been sold or mortgaged to a third person.

The unit owner may engage the renter in a rent-to-own agreement, which will be exempt from coverage of the law.

Pfizer Made It?

Did they or did they not?

Reacting to the recent Senate Inquiry wherein Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile told that Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company bribed the government in order to stop the implementation of the Cheaper Medicines Law, Pfizer Philippines' Corporate Legal Counsel Millete Asuncion clarified that Enrile's accusations are not true.

This surfaced after Reiner Gloor, executive director of Pharmaceutical and Healthcare Association of the Philippines, testified to the Senate and said that Pfizer Philippines reportedly made an offer to the Department of Health before the list of the maximum retail price (MRP) for essential medicines was released last month.

Pfizer allegedly offered the government five million discount cards with an estimated worth of P100 million.

As has been in previous controversies, the name of President Gloria Arroyo is once again being dragged into the issue. The Senate has summoned the President, after she has allegedly conducted a secret meeting with multinational pharmaceutical firms last week.

President Arroyo, Health Secretary Francisco Duque, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, Trade Secretary Peter Fabila, and Budget Secretary Rolando Andaya, Jr., however, did not attend the inquiry.

July 27 Is A Non-Working Holiday

President Arroyo has signed Republic Act 9645 declaring July 27, 2009 as a Non-Working Holiday to commemorate the founding of Iglesia Ni Cristo.

Iglesia Ni Cristo is a church denomination known for its bloc-voting during elections. Thus, politicians usually seek their support during campaign periods.

Rumor: Arroyo Had A Surgery

Is the rumor true that President Gloria Arroyo underwent a surgery (re: bleeding breast implant) at the Asian Hospital in Alabang?

The palace, however, denied the news (see Inquirer.net):

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's political adviser on Friday expressed shock at reports that Ms Arroyo had a breast implant replacement at the Asian Hospital in Muntinlupa City.

"What? Silicon implants? That's the first time I heard about that,"
Secretary Gabriel Claudio said in a phone interview.

"No way; I just heard that from you. I thought you were joking."

Claudio said that he had "absolutely no information" about Ms Arroyo's breast implant replacement, adding he was not even aware that she had an implant
in the first place.

I Support Randy David

At last, I see a spark of hope.

I see a real opposition.



I had this interesting discussion on mlq3's Outflanking her Enemies article, discussing the possibility of GMA declaring Martial Rule to extend his term which ends in June 2010.

Another big possibility is GMA running for congresswoman in Pampanga; a rumor which keep circulating since March 2009.

also for the opposition to see the situation through, sit, discuss together, and
unite to formalize their options.

2. taxj: Bingo, siyetehan. History is repeating itself too soon. Simply substitute Gloria for Marcos, and the treatise remains valid.

Unfortunately, all presidential aspirants are obviously more concerned with

for the free media mileage. This is why they are outflanked by Glorias, and
people don’t fill the streets. It’s never fun watching the antics of beasts of
prey.

I see no relief even after a Gloria exit. Were the evil bitch only less so,
an extension of her sevice or disservice, in exchange for a reinvigrated Charter
through a Con Ass, would have been less intolerable. I doubt though whether a
Senateless Con Ass would prosper, with or without demos.

3. SoP: In the end, GMA has to be voted at the very least
as congresswoman in Pampanga to push trough with steps 2-10.

I don’t think she’s a shoe-in for congresswoman. I think Kapampangans will surprise Filipinos when they overwhelmingly vote for GMA’s opposition in 2010. You’ve heard it her 1st.

4. siyetehan: I just hope that the Opposition will do something
about it.

May plano na palang tumakbong kongresista si Gloria….

Is the opposition finding a formidable opponent for her? Or does the
Opposition continue to oppose eache other still?

5. SoP: I think an independent could run against her and still
win. It doesn’t have to be the opposition.

While I do not quite agree on the last statement, I believe that somebody of a credible stature could give GMA a good fight should she decide to run for congresswoman.

And so this declaration from Professor Randy David has come just in time to give a spark of hope not only for Pampanga, but for the entire nation who clamor for a major change.

As David puts it,

"Hindi puedeng salita na lang tayo nang salita [We can't just keep on talking] when we know something is wrong".


Well, then, let's get ready to rumble!!!!!

The committee on health of the House of Representatives will hold a meeting
Monday with health officials and representatives of the World Health
Organization (WHO) to talk about the Influenza A(H1N1) virus amid its rapid
spread in the country.

My Views: Why only now? The pandemic virus has been sensational since April or May, and our Solons only focus on this two months after-when about 400 Filipinos are finally inflicted. Talk about the Philippines being "not ready" to face the crisis. (In short, mas interesado pa kasi sila sa isyu ni Katrina at Hayden- at sa Con Ass).

If President Arroyo decides to run for a congressional seat in
Pampanga in the 2010 elections, it would be tantamount to abandoning the
presidency, Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile said yesterday.
